WALKING WITHIN THE VOID 

The Language of Chinese Abstraction

BOSTON, MA — TAG Gallery is pleased to present Walking Within the Void: The Language of Chinese Abstraction, a solo exhibition by Beijing-based painter Qiuhua (Quinnie) Zhu, on view September 4 through September 27, 2026. An opening reception will be held on Friday, September 4, from 5:00 to 9:00 PM. 

Rooted in Chinese philosophical and artistic traditions while embracing the freedom of contemporary abstraction, Zhu’s paintings explore the space between emptiness and existence, stillness and movement, the visible and the unseen. 

Drawing from Daoist thought, ancient Chinese wu culture, Buddhist traditions, music, calligraphy, and the symbolism of early civilizations, Zhu approaches abstraction as both a visual and philosophical language. Her paintings contemplate the emergence of form from emptiness, the Daoist concept of xu and the continuous cycles of energy, transformation, dissolution, and renewal that connect human experience to the larger cosmos. 

The exhibition brings together works and series including All Things Grow, Altar, Viewpoint, Quantum Entanglement, Soul’s Walk, Heart’s Anchor, Midnight Waltz, The Key of Life, Four Seasons, Flame Ascending, and Libertango. Across the exhibition, sweeping gestures, layered surfaces, rhythmic lines, and intense passages of color create compositions that appear to expand, collide, dissolve, and re-form. 

In All Things Grow, inspired by mani stone cairns and prayer flags in the Tibetan highlands, earthly and cosmic energies converge in a meditation on vitality and renewal. Altar transforms the ancient ritual site into a contemporary sanctuary of the inner self,

while Viewpoint considers perception and the possibility of seeing beyond the immediately visible. 

Music provides another important current throughout Zhu’s practice. The improvisational energy of jazz and the flowing resonance of the Chinese guqin find visual counterparts in works such as Heart’s Anchor and Midnight Waltz. In the more recent Libertango series, rhythm, tension, movement, and release become expressions of freedom and transformation. 

Zhu’s artistic language is grounded in an extensive engagement with Chinese art and culture. She graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), Department of Traditional Chinese Painting (Guohua) and, as a second-generation disciple of renowned Chinese ink painter Li Kuchan, studied under Professor Jiao Kequn. Although classically trained, Zhu has developed a distinctly contemporary abstract vocabulary that carries the philosophical and gestural inheritance of Chinese painting into new territory. 

Her career also extends well beyond the studio. Zhu is the founder of Yiya Culture and Arts Institute in Beijing, a nonprofit providing arts education to underserved children and adolescents. She has served as a researcher at the Palace Museum in Beijing, taught at the Beijing Youth Palace, and organized educational programs, exhibitions, lectures, cultural gatherings, and research initiatives. This long-standing commitment to education and cultural exchange informs an artistic practice in which creativity, philosophy, and social engagement remain closely intertwined. 

At its core, Walking Within the Void asks viewers to consider abstraction not simply as a departure from representation, but as a means of encountering forces that cannot easily be depicted: consciousness, memory, energy, spirituality, time, and transformation. 

Through Zhu’s paintings, the void is not an empty space. It is a place of possibility, a space from which movement, thought, life, and creation continually emerge.
