Whether you’re seeking to broaden your horizons while looking to understand the evolving landscape, this discussion is designed to offer valuable insights. Our guests will cover the different types of residencies available, from institutional to independent, and explore the opportunities and challenges each presents. Attendees will gain a comprehensive understanding of what to expect in terms of support, output, community engagement, and professional growth. This talk promises to equip artists with the knowledge to make informed decisions about their residency pursuits and maximize the benefits of their experiences.
Guest Speakers
Mary Sherman is an artist, curator, and Executive Director at TransCultural Exchange. Founded in Chicago in 1989, TransCultural Exchange’s mission is to foster a greater understanding of world cultures through large-scale global art projects, cultural exchanges, and educational programming, notably an International Conference on Opportunities in the Arts held biennially.
Lisa Goren is a visual artist, art teacher, and marketing expert. Known for her travels to Antarctica, Iceland, Alaska, and near the North Pole, her work is in personal collections worldwide. She chronicled her 2013 Arctic Circle Residency in an article for the New York Times and has participated in exhibitions coinciding with the COP21 Climate talks in Paris. She also delivered a Google Talk discussing her art and travels.
Rebecca Reynolds is the Executive Director and founding President of Manship Artists Residency + Studios (MARS). With nearly 30 years of experience as a museum professional and arts administrator, Rebecca has a distinguished background, including roles as a curator and art consultant specializing in American sculpture. She was the founding director of the Forest Hills Educational Trust and has served on Gloucester’s Committee for the Arts. MARS is dedicated to preserving an environmentally and historically significant site revitalized as an international artists’ residency, continuing the legacy of sculptor Paul Manship and many other artists.
Stephanie Marlin is the Visual Arts Manager at The Umbrella Arts Center where she curates the gallery program and specialized exhibitions and manages Open Studios and Winter Market and the Studio Artists program. Stephanie oversees the Umbrella’s Artist-in-Residence program, which offers residencies in Visual Arts and Ceramics in a multidisciplinary art center with 50 artist studios, state-of-the art ceramics facility, woodshop, arts education classrooms for all ages, vacation camps, two theaters offering productions by The Umbrella Stage Company and two gallery spaces in historic Concord, MA.
