JUROR: LaiSun Keane, Owner at LaiSun Keane Contemporary Art Gallery. Back in April 2020, at the beginning of the Covid lockdown, LaiSun took a leap and opened her own gallery, determined to add her voice to Boston’s unique art scene. Fast forward four years, and she’s rocked over 40 exhibitions and eight art fairs. LaiSun’s gallery is all about celebrating the unique perspectives of minority artists through thoughtfully curated, thematic, and thought-provoking rotating exhibitions.

We invite you to submit up to two pieces of artwork that embody the theme “Beyond the Expected: Art in Flux.” This theme highlights the artist’s ability to innovate continually, adapt their practices, and explore new frontiers in artistic expression. It suggests artistic processes incorporating elements of chance, spontaneity, or unexpected outcomes, and may refer to works created through experimental techniques or unconventional materials.

ELIGIBILITY:

All are welcome. Visual artists and artisans from all regions are invited to apply for this call

*Artists must be 18 and older.

TIMELINE:

Exhibition Dates: September 6 -29

Call for Entry Deadline: August 18, 2024, 11:59 PM Eastern Time

Notifications to Artists: August 23

Artwork delivery to Gallery:  Saturday, August 24 and Sunday August 25, 2pm – 5pm 

Artwork picked up by Artists: Sunday September 29 between 12pm – 5pm 

Opening Reception: Friday, September 13 5pm-8pm

The submission fee:

GalateaFine Art and TAG members $5 per piece

General entry fee: $15 one piece , $5 additional piece 

GUIDELINE:

Submission of artwork is considered an acceptance of all guidelines. Artists may submit up to two (2) pieces. Any / all artwork can be accompanied by explanatory text as needed to be properly comprehended by the layperson. Size limit: 18 x 18 considering the frame ( not required). 

Hanging works must be ready to hang with the appropriate hanging hardware. Frame is NOT required. Artwork must remain in the exhibition throughout the duration of the show. No substitutions are allowed prior to the exhibition’s close.

Each artist may submit digital samples of 2D or 3D artworks. The images must represent the art being submitted. Only one image per artwork is required, we will contact you in case we need more documentation.

– All images must be uploaded as jpeg files, no smaller than 600 pixels. Your image must be less than 2MB in size.

– Files should be titled as follows: LastName_FirstName_ImageNumber (example: Smith_Joan_01.jpg)

– Mediums accepted: Painting, Drawing, Photograph, Printing, Mixed Media, Digital, Paper, Fiber, Wood, Ceramics, Glass, Metal.

No other artwork can substitute for the piece submitted and accepted.

Artwork image may be used for marketing purposes.

Juror  may decide to accept any number from zero to all 2 submitted pieces for the show.

Selling Work, and Consignment:

Artists in the exhibition can sell their work through the show; if so, a price can be provided, but only after your work has been selected. Those not wishing to sell their work must list NFS (“Not For Sale”) as the price. Any work sold in the exhibition plus sale tax will be paid to the artist minus 30% commission required by Galatea Fine Art. Payment will be sent to artists upon receiving the buyer’s fee. Works sold in the exhibition must stay on view until the exhibition’s conclusion, with no substitutions allowed. NEAC will not take any commission from sales.

About the organizer:

Claudia Fiks is an experienced art administrator with over two decades of dedication to the arts and culture sector. She is the founder and director of the New England Art Center, a newly established membership organization featuring The Art Gallery (TAG), a retail store, and a variety of educational art-related activities. Additionally, Claudia serves as the Director of Galatea Fine Art in Boston’s vibrant SoWA Arts and Design District, overseeing the gallery’s operations and curatorial direction. Claudia is deeply involved in the arts community, wearing many hats. She directs Newton Open Studios, contributes as a writer and correspondent for Artscope Magazine, and leads guided tours at prestigious art fairs such as Art Basel and Art Miami Basel. As an independent consultant, she provides expertise to various art organizations and artists, helping to shape their programs and initiatives. Her extensive career includes notable positions such as Program Director and Development Director at esteemed institutions like the Eliot School for Fine and Applied Arts, Fuller Craft Museum, and the Society of Arts and Crafts. Beyond her administrative duties, Claudia serves as a grant panelist for the Mass Cultural Council, curates exhibitions and open calls in the Boston area, and actively fosters inclusion and champions creative expression. Her work is a testament to her unwavering dedication to creating opportunities for widespread artistic engagement.
