Boston – TAG Gallery Presents Where I Am From: A Solo Exhibition by Kris Laping An exploration of memory, landscape, and the emotional geography of belonging
We are proud to present Where I Am From, a solo exhibition by Boston-based painter Kris Laping, opening April 3 and on view through April 26, 2026. In this deeply reflective body of work, Laping explores the landscapes, both real and remembered, that shape our sense of identity and belonging. Through expressive gestures, luminous color, and atmospheric compositions, her paintings move beyond representation to evoke the emotional terrain of memory, inviting viewers to consider how the places we carry within us continue to influence who we are and who we become.
The exhibition opens during SoWa’s First Friday on April 3 from 5–8 PM, offering visitors the opportunity to encounter the work in conversation with the artist and the broader arts community. A formal Opening Reception will follow on Saturday, April 4 from 4–6 PM.
At the heart of Where I Am From lies the idea that place is more than geography, it is emotional terrain. Laping’s paintings draw from environments that have anchored her life and artistic journey, translating lived experiences into atmospheric compositions that evoke light, memory, and sensation. Coastal horizons, distant hills, and the quiet stillness of historic landscapes become catalysts for reflection, suggesting that identity is shaped by a constellation of places rather than a single origin.
Working primarily in oil, Laping creates works that balance intimacy with expansiveness. Her paintings merge influences from French Impressionism’s sensitivity to light and color with the bold gesture and energy of American Abstract Expressionism, resulting in compositions that feel both contemplative and dynamic. Each canvas becomes a visual meditation on time, memory, and belonging, an attempt to capture fleeting emotional moments and transform them into lasting visual narratives. Through layered color, gestural mark-making, and evocative atmospheres, the works in this exhibition ask a quiet but profound question: How do the places we carry within us continue to shape who we are becoming?
Based in Boston’s South End and working from the SoWa artist studio buildings, Laping has exhibited widely throughout New England and beyond, with works included in private collections across the United States. Her paintings have appeared in exhibitions at venues including the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University, among others.
Curated and presented by Claudia Fiks, founder of TAG Gallery, Where I Am From is part of a broader curatorial exploration this season at TAG that examines how memory, place, and personal narrative inform artistic practice. Laping’s exhibition offers viewers an invitation to reflect not only on where they come from geographically, but on the emotional landscapes that shape their sense of self.
