Exploring Chemistry & Movement
A Solo Exhibition by Jean M. Bernstein
Exhibition Dates: August 7 – 30, 2026
Location: TAG | The Art Gallery, SoWa Art + Design District, Boston
TAG Gallery is pleased to present Exploring Chemistry & Movement, a solo exhibition by Boston-based photographer Jean M. Bernstein, on view from August 7 through August 30, 2026. Through experimental photographic processes that embrace both intention and unpredictability, Bernstein invites viewers to reconsider the boundaries between documentation and abstraction.
The exhibition brings together two distinct bodies of work created through Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) and Film Soup, techniques that transform the photographic image in dramatically different ways. With ICM, Bernstein deliberately moves the camera during exposure, creating luminous, painterly compositions that dissolve familiar subjects into rhythm, color, and gesture. In contrast, her Film Soup photographs undergo chemical transformations after exposure, as the film is immersed in solutions such as coffee, tea, wine, citrus, and spices. The results are beautifully unpredictable, revealing unexpected colors, textures, and visual disruptions that challenge conventional photography.
Rather than simply recording the world, Bernstein’s photographs explore photography as a process of discovery. Chance and control exist in constant dialogue, encouraging viewers to embrace uncertainty and to find beauty in transformation. Printed on aluminum, the works gain an added luminosity and depth that enhances their immersive quality.
Based in East Boston, Bernstein draws inspiration from the contrasts that have shaped her life, from her Midwestern roots to the layered urban landscape of Boston. Her practice spans street photography and abstraction, united by a fascination with movement, form, texture, and moments that invite curiosity beyond the immediately recognizable. She is a member of
TAG | The Art Gallery and the East Boston Artists Group, and has exhibited at Atlantic Works Gallery, LynnArts Gallery, Future Lab(s) Gallery, and TAG.
With Exploring Chemistry & Movement, Bernstein demonstrates that photography is not merely about preserving a moment, but about revealing the endless possibilities that emerge when vision, experimentation, and chance intersect. The exhibition invites visitors to slow down, look closely, and experience photography as an evolving act of transformation.
