A Solo Exhibition by Matthias Lupri: Myths of Semblance

TAG | The Art Gallery is pleased to present Myths of Semblance, a solo exhibition by German-born, Boston-based artist Matthias Lupri. On view from May 1 through May 31, 2026, the exhibition brings together a dynamic body of work that explores the fragile boundary between perception and reality where meaning is continuously constructed, filtered, and reimagined.
At the heart of Myths of Semblance lies a compelling proposition: what we perceive as reality is never fixed or objective. Instead, it is shaped through layers of memory, emotion, and subconscious narrative. Drawing from philosophical and aesthetic discourse, Lupri’s work embraces the idea that meaning is both revealed and concealed, inviting reflection rather than resolution.
The exhibition features a range of Lupri’s signature visual languages, including colorful cubist portraits, geometric abstractions, and richly textured landscapes. His compositions are informed by dreams, inner memory, and an ongoing dialogue with art historical movements such as Abstract Expressionism, while also reflecting the influence of artists like Pablo Picasso, Gerhard Richter, and Anselm Kiefer. Through these references, Lupri does not seek to replicate, but rather to reinterpret, building a visual language that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.
Born in Germany and raised in the expansive natural landscapes of Alberta, Canada, Lupri developed an early sensitivity to nature, myth, and imagination. His fascination with these elements continues to inform his work, where forms often oscillate between the recognizable and the symbolic, the grounded and the transcendental. There is a sense that each image holds something just beyond reach—an echo of something known, yet not fully grasped.
A defining aspect of Lupri’s practice is his background in music. A trained jazz vibraphonist who studied under Gary Burton at Berklee College of Music, Lupri spent years performing internationally and recording original compositions before shifting his focus to painting in 2012. This musical foundation remains central to his visual work, which carries a strong sense of rhythm, improvisation, and intuitive structure. His compositions unfold much like musical arrangements—layered, responsive, and guided by an internal logic that resists rigid form.
Working primarily with oil, wax, and charcoal, Lupri employs a palette knife technique that builds dense, tactile surfaces. These textures serve not only as formal elements, but as metaphors for accumulation—of experience, memory, and time. His paintings become spaces where the conscious and unconscious intersect, where archetypes and personal narratives emerge and dissolve.
“Myths of Semblance” reflects Lupri’s ongoing inquiry into the nature of perception and the human condition. His work suggests that what we see is never simply what is there—it is something we participate in creating. In this way, the exhibition offers not answers, but an invitation: to look closely, to question, and to embrace the ambiguity inherent in seeing.
“One can truly find their inner path by letting their work unfold naturally.” — Matthias Lupri
Lupri has exhibited widely in New York, Boston, Miami, Cape Cod, and Charleston, and his work is held in private collections internationally
